GTA VI Goes Fully Woke—and Fully Wild—in Bold New Direction
Vice City just got way more inclusive—and way more explosive. Rockstar Games has officially unveiled Grand Theft Auto VI, and it’s already the most controversial entry yet. The game’s plot centers on Toni Vega, a genderfluid antihero navigating crime, identity, and gentrification in a reimagined Vice City teeming with social tension—and side missions. In a move hailed by some and memed by many, Rockstar has implemented a sweeping new set of features reflecting modern social issues. Players can now visit transition clinics to undergo gender-affirming surgery as part of their character’s development, complete with voice therapy minigames and wardrobe overhauls. But that’s not all—Vice City now includes abortion clinics, which play into certain story arcs about bodily autonomy and political corruption. These clinics can be defended from extremist groups in a series of side missions titled “My Body, My Glock.” The game also features migrant neighborhoods populated by characters from fictional war-torn nations, many of whom become allies or clients as you rise through the criminal underworld. You’ll smuggle supplies, forge documents, or help them start businesses—all depending on whether you lean toward chaos or compassion. Rockstar says the game’s narrative was crafted by a diverse team of writers and designers, thanks to its expanded DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiative. "We wanted Vice City to reflect the complexities of the real world," said creative director Liv Chen. "That includes the joy, the struggle, and the badassery of marginalized communities." Critics have dubbed it “Woke Theft Auto,” but fans are already calling it Rockstar’s most daring and heartfelt game yet. Yes, you can still hijack a helicopter and crash it into a yacht—but this time, you might do it after attending a drag show fundraiser for refugee artists.
